The Harley carburetor has a long life provided you tune it from time to time. You won't face any kind of hassle in driving your bike if the tuning is done properly.</p>
<p>The process of tuning for better performance</p>
<p>Don't think you won't be able to do it and dump your bike in a garage. It is nothing like that. Things are rather simple and you can yourself conduct the process of tuning the Harley carburetor. The tuning becomes important for the maintenance of the carburetor. </p>
<p>Well to begin with remove the Harley carburetor from the main body of the engine. You cannot just open and remove it as if opening your shirt. A particular technique has to be followed. The fuel has to be removed from the carburetor bowl and only then you can clean the thing. The backing plate and the bolts are to be removed in parts and the choke cable has to be also taken off. </p>
<p>The throttle cables are next put down. Therefore one by one the individual parts are disassembled. You need not entirely open the throttle cables. When the carburetor bowl is cleaned with the carburetor cleaner and you set down to reset the arrangement, adjust the throttle cables in the right location. </p>
<p>Resetting of the cables and reinstallation of the carburetor</p>
<p>The final round of tuning is the process of reassembling and fixing up the cables along with the clean carburetor bowl. The problem you face while riding a bike in simple terms is the heating up of the engine. And you fail to judge that the problem lies with the carburetor. Most of the times you even decide to change the whole unit of the carburetor. </p>
<p>Such changes are not required in Haley's carburetor. Simple tuning brings it back to the original performance. While tuning there is a chance of misplacing a cable or it can also be so that you cannot fix the exact cables in the right place. It is always suggested to tag or mark the cables used in a Harley carburetor. This will create no fuss either at the times of removal or at the times of resetting.</p>
<p>The wiring system attached to the cables of the carburetor is to be handled with care. Don't damage the fine metal wires or else you will have to replace them and get new ones fixed up. After tuning your bike or specifically the Harley carburetor, take a short trip and enjoy the difference. You won't complain any more about the engine.</p>

The only exception is the VRod, which was engineered by Porsche and designed by Ness.  Harley only MAKES the bike.  Now, before all of you Harley guys start jumping all over me, I work on HD motorcycles along with all other brands.  HD's are under-engineered, they ARE NOT 100% american, alot of the parts are taiwanese and chinese, just assembled here- so you can stop the "buy American" BS right there.  HD sells a lifestyle, not the best bike.  HD sells more T-shirts every day than motorcycles produced since 1903.  Think about that.  I am sure you know of a number of people with the HD stickers, shirts, Ford P/U trucks and boots that don't even know how to ride.. They are marketing geniuses.  The bikes are sub-standard compared to other makes.  Want American?  Go buy a Victory.  Pound for pound, a better bike.  They actually had to DECREASE the cooling of the oil because the bike is actually engineered correctly, versus the "hot" second cylinder that has plagued HD since, well, 1903!..  I ride a Triumph and a BMW, average 20K+ per year, and work on many bikes.  I frequently get HD owners that tell me that they ride "a bunch" every year, and it turns out that 1500 miles per year is "a bunch"!!  Hell, that's a weekend for me!  I NEVER have mechanical problems, my bikes are comfortable, and they handle!!  Nothing like this can be said of 90% of the HD's out there.  I do not mean to beat up HD's so much, but a fact is a fact.  I am leaving you with 3 of my favorite sayings:  1.  A harley by any other name would be just as slow.  2. If HD made an airplane, would you fly in it? and 3. 98% of all HD's made are still on the road- the other 2% made it home.  Have a nice day, do not fall into the HD lifestyle trap, buy a real motorcycle, and enjoy the ride!</p>

<p>As the name would suggest Biketoberfest is a motorcycle festival generally held in mid-October in Daytona Beach. Motorcycle enthusiast from all over the country and even some from Europe come to see and be seen.</p>
<p>Biketoberfest began as The Daytona Fall Tour," was first held in October 1992. It all started when Janet Kersey was hired as director of tourism events and promotions she was tasked by the Daytona Beach Area Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau to create special events that would attract visitors during off-season periods.</p>
<p>The first assignment they gave to her was to create a special biker event, similar to the ever-popular Bike Week, centered around the American Motorcycle Association's annual fall races held each October at Daytona International Speedway. The event, was called "The Daytona Fall Tour featured a 125-mile scenic touring ride through Volusia County, bike shows, races at Daytona International Speedway and Bikefest -- a series of activities offered mainly by the merchants of Main Street. The motorcycling festival attracted 5,000 new visitors, mostly from Florida to the Daytona Beach area.</p>
<p>The success of the Convention and Visitors Bureau's Daytona Fall Tour attracted increased interest from local merchants and the surrounding community. In 1993, local companies, especially Daytona Harley-Davidson, sponsored concerts, trade shows, and other activities. Under the CVB's direction,during that time period, Biketoberferst activities grew to 40 events in a three-day time span, today there are many events to watch and maybe even a few you'd like to participant in.</p>
<p>During the event the best place to start is right on Main Street in Daytona Beach. This popular bikers' spot has hosted celebrities, international guests and media from across the globe. You just can't get the full Biketoberfest experience without a stroll down this ultra famous street. Once there you're likely to see anything and everything including spectacular, high-end custom bikes and the latest, goofiest bikes on the planet, and vendors are everywhere selling the most unique items and food around. Be sure to visit some of the famous Main Street bars, many of which have been around for decades serving generation after generation of bikers. Biking has become an all in the family pastime, many wives ride with their husbands, on their own bikes, and as the kids get older sometimes they even join in the fun. Be sure to pick up many of the many unique styles of Biketoberfest t-shirts always on sale to commemorate your time there whether it's your first or fiftieth visit, every year the t-shirts are specially made with a different design and become collectors editions the minute the event is over. <p>The rumor mill never seems to slow down when it comes to Harley-Davidson and its future bikes. I guess that kind of passion and curiosity is what drives the MoCo. The rumor of a factory Harley-Davidson trike making a comeback after more than three decades is true. The new Tri Glide Ultra Classic will be available at your local Harley dealer in limited numbers as a 2009 model.  </p>
<p>Let’s start with what the machine is and isn’t. It is a genuine Harley-Davidson covered by a full factory 2 year warrantee. It is manufactured by Harley in association with Lehman Trikes of South Dakota. It lists for $29,999 (in the US) and is available in the 48 contiguous US states and Canada. It is well engineered, looks good and is a blast to ride. It isn’t a warmed over Lehman trike. I don’t know why this project was internally nicknamed “Boomer” but it was, and now you know.</p>
<p>What’s involved in riding a trike verses a bike? Well, let’s just say that they are exactly the same only different. Quite different. Same throttle, clutch, shifter and brakes. But the handling is more like a car because trikes don’t lean, they steer around turns. So get used to pulling on one side of the handlebars and pushing on the other through the turns. And, thanks to all the extra weight out back, you’ll have to slip the clutch a bit more and give it a bit more throttle coming off a stop than with a bike. Plus you can keep your feet on the floorboards all the time, even at a full stop. And always remember that your machine is a lot wider than a bike, even a bagger, when going through narrow spaces. And just because you missed the pothole in the road with your front tire doesn’t mean you’ll miss it with your rear ones. And. . . well you get the idea. Trikes and bikes are simply different.</p>
<p>Out on the road the Tri Glide is impressive. I have ridden several old and new trikes over the years and feel this is the best of the breed. Superior handling, a healthy power train and top notch fit and finish – and this was on a pre-production model! The low and high speed handling is more neutral than I expect from a trike. I suspect the purpose-build frame and specific fork geometry and rear suspension has a lot to do with that. Once you get used to slipping the clutch slightly from a dead stop and push/pull steering on the handlebars, riding the Tri Glide is a blast. I predict these machines will sell out quickly with a waiting line once word is out on how much fun they are.  Anyone who has ridden a two-wheel motorcycle will quickly take to the Tri Glide and will be confidently cruising the highways and slicing through zig zag turns on back roads in no time.</p>
<p>In our discussions with Harley’s marketing and engineering staff we heard how the main goal for the Tri Glide was “to extend riding access” which we took to mean extending the riding season (trikes handle better in snow, ice and rain than bikes do) as well as making people more comfortable riding a stable three-wheeler than a less stable two-wheeler. The Harley staffers told us their target customers tend to be more experienced riders.  One of the senior people confided in us “A lot of people who try a Tri Glide for the first time are pleased and surprised with the ride.” After we put some miles on one we have to agree,</p>
<p>Unlike any other current model Harley-Davidson that I am aware of, the host portion of the new Tri Glides are built on a new assembly line in the York factory. It is then shipped to the Lehman factory in South Dakota to be finished. From there, the complete machines are shipped to Milwaukee where they are forwarded on to the dealer network. When we asked about the relationship between Lehman Trikes and Harley-Davidson we were told that Lehman is actively involved in the process, but the Harley Tri Glides are quite different than Lehman’s own Ultra-based trikes. While the Lehman version uses a modified stock Harley FL frame and one-piece rear body section, the Tri Glides use unique, purpose-built frames and separate rear body sections and fenders. Harley assured us the current association with Lehman is not based on a buy-out or a joint venture. Harley views Lehman as a supplier.</p>
<p>OK, so what else is unique or unusual about the Tri Glide? We have already touched on the specific-to-this-model frame with increased fork angle and less trail for better steering effort. It has an electronic hand control to activate the optional electric reverse motor. The front forks are longer than those on the two-wheel Ultras and have an external steering stabilizer for a more consistent ride. </p>
<p>The front wheel is a 16 inch hoop, the rears are 15 inchers. The wheels and brake rotors all match. Machines with this much weight need good brakes, and the front dual Brembos are up to the task.  The 103 cubic inch engine mated with a heavy duty police-style clutch offers sufficient power to get down the road quite smartly. The Tri Glide has a unique transmission case and rear mounts are also different from the stock Harley Ultra two-wheel version. There is a standard oil cooler to help keep engine temperatures down, and the new for 2009 mufflers compliment the modified header pipes. </p>

<p>The Tour Pak is rated for up to 30 pounds of cargo, and the trunk, featuring hidden hinges and a lockable latch, can handle an additional 50 pounds in 4.3 cubic feet. We like the rear fenders are separate from the trunk and attached to it. Typically the trunk and rear fenders on most trikes are built as one unit making repairs or replacement quite expensive.  </p>
<p>Apparently Harley management had been considering the possibility of adding a trike to the line-up for some time but there were many issues to deal with. These included safety concerns, marketing options, and manufacturing challenges. When we asked about the stability of a Tri Glide in various real world riding conditions, one of the Harley engineers responded by saying they designed it with several goals in mind. “We wanted it to slip” he said, “before it would tip.” </p>
<p>2 critical measures the trike had to pass were the lane change maneuver at highway speeds, and the steady state turn (in tight circles at increasing speeds). The trike accomplished both with room to spare. Harley management ok’d the project when they realized the Ultra-based Tri Glide can go faster and corner harder than a stock Harley Ultra motorcycle “so we felt a comfort zone there.”</p>
<p>All the 2009 Tri Glides will be based on Ultra Classics. But Harley isn’t saying whether this might change in the future to expand across other models using V-Rods, Dynas or Sportsters as the base. However, given the fact that Harley considers the Tri Glide a new separate model platform, I’d bet there are more variations in the works. Personally, I’d like to see a water-cooled V-Rod powered trike.</p>
<p>Harley is planning on building only 2500 Tri Glides for 2009 in three color options – Vivid Black, Dark Blue Pearl or Red Hot Sunglo, and plans are for them to be available in Harley dealerships in August 2008. MSRP is $29,999, which is significantly less than a similar Lehman Harley Ultra, and the Tri Glide comes with a 2-year factory warrantee. Want one? Better get your name and deposit to your dealer ASAP. They are going to go fast.</p>

<p>Dealing with Emissions</p>
<p>The full Harley exhaust is designed to deal with the output of an engine, dealing with environmental, aesthetic, and legal issues.</p>
<p>The converter is designed to change harmful chemicals in the emissions into something less damaging to the environment.  It uses a catalyst to convert dangerous gasses, including carbon monoxide and unburned fuel into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other innocuous compounds.  Reducing harmful emissions is not only environmentally friendly - it is also required by the EPA.</p>
<p>The muffler control sound and sparks.   Although many Harley owners like the roar of their engine, many communities have noise ordinances that limit how loud your bike can be. Consider a path from the gas tank through the engine to the exhaust.  If any part of that path is restricted, the whole system slows down and that means less fuel to your engine and less power.</p>
<p>Most people understand that a clog in the fuel line reduces power but may not realize that a clogged exhaust can do the same. Clogs aren't the only problem.  An inefficient Harley exhaust restricts the flow from the engine and that creates a backup which cuts performance.  Well designed systems with smooth curves rather than sharp corners allow the exhaust to vent more easily and the engine to run better.</p>
<p>High vs. Low Mounting</p>
<p>Where you put your exhaust, a high vs. a low position, will generally be determined by the bike's use. High-mounted Harley exhausts are used for bikes that will be used on trails and off-road.  These bikes get a lot of dirt and water coming their way and the pipes are mounted high to keep these contaminants from getting into the exhaust and clogging it.</p>
<p>The problem with high-mounted exhausts is that they aren't very passenger friendly.  Street bikes are more likely to carry passengers and don't need the protection of high mounts.  These motorcycles are more likely to opt for low-mounted exhaust systems.</p>
<p>Choosing the right exhaust system is key to both the look and performance of your bike so consider all of your needs before making your choice.</p>

<p>It's a secret that I'm no longer afraid to tell. I've spent too many years on the back of a motorcycle and I want to be in control. Is there anything wrong with that? Obviously not or why would I see all of these women on the road and loving it? It's been 3 years since my husband Jake purchased his Screamin' Eagle® Electra Glide® motorcycle. I love to gear up and go riding with him. We've been everywhere. We ventured out west last summer and it was amazing. I made up my mind to learn to ride and get my own bike while we were on the trip out west.</p>
<p>I got up my courage to tell Jake about my plans. "Jake, I really want to get my own bike and become a rider!"</p>
<p>"Oh, you do, do you," Jake said with a half grin. "When did you come to this decision?"</p>
<p>"Remember when we pulled over at the Grand Canyon last summer and that group of <a href="http://www.hmhd.com/hogchapter/officers.asp" title="Ladies of Harley">"Ladies of Harley" </a>rode in and started taking off their helmets. I remember watching them with such envy and thinking I'm gonna do it. Remember when I went to that Ladies Garage Party at <a href="http://www.hmhd.com/dealership/" title="Adventure Harley-Davidson">Adventure Harley-Davidson </a>this winter?"</p>
<p>"Yep, I'm the one who told you that Adventure Harley-Davidson was having a Ladies Garage Party," Jake crooned.</p>
<p>"Well that experience was fantastic. I took Lil and Jess with me. We got to sit on the bikes, rev them and get our picture taken on a Harley. All those great folks at Adventure told us about proper gear and showed us how to pick up a bike. When I stopped at the bike customizing session I was blown away. I couldn't believe all the chrome and accessories I could dress my bike in, to make it truly mine. I told Jim, from Adventure, that I wanted to sign up for the <a href="http://www.hmhd.com/dealership/RidersEdge.aspx" title="Rider">Rider's Edge® New Rider Course </a>this summer. Lil and Jess are signing up also."</p>
<p>"So you girls are going to learn to ride at the same time?"</p>
<p>"Yes, Jake. What do you think?"</p>
<p>"Well, I'm thinking that Ted, Bill and I are about to go Harley shopping with our three excited wives. Let's call them up and see if they are busy on Saturday. I heard Adventure was having a huge party on Saturday."</p>
<p>"Jake, you know Adventure always has something happening on Saturday." Saturday couldn't get here fast enough. Our friends Lil and Ted beat us there. My sister in-law Jess and her husband Bill pulled in right behind us. The three of us ladies practically ran for Adventure's front door. There was a ton going on at Adventure that Saturday. They had a charity BBQ cook-off. People were everywhere. All I wanted to do was pick out my bike. Lil and Jess had already started asking questions of Nate and Lori (a couple of the great sales team) at Adventure. Gary came walking over towards Jake and I.</p>
<p>"How are you folks, today?" Gary asked with a grin.</p>
<p>"We're great. We're trying to find the right bike for me," I blurted with excitement.</p>
<p>"So your looking for a bike that will fit you right and feel great. I've got some suggestions," Gary said.</p>
<p>"I'm short as you can see. I have ridden on my husband's bike and am signed up to take the Rider's Edge® New Rider Course."</p>
<p>"Great, I was just about to tell you that a 883 Low is a great bike to start out on. It is the lightest of the Harley-Davidson line-up. A lot of people start out on an 883 Low and then trade up as they gain their confidence.</p>
<p>"I like the looks of the Sportster® 883 Low. I love all of these Harley-Davidson motorcycles," I spouted so excited I could hardly catch my breath.</p>
<p>"Since you are used to riding with your husband, being on a bike and are taking our Rider's Edge® New Riders Course you may feel confident enough to start out on a Softail® Deluxe or a V-Rod®! Both of these motorcycles have a low center of gravity and would fit you perfectly. Why don't you sit on all three and see what you think."</p>
<p>"I love this Softail® Deluxe. What is this color? It is gorgeous!"</p>
<p>"That color is White Gold Pearl and Black Pearl. You would love a Softail® Deluxe. The 09 feature a rigid-mounted Twin Cam 96B Engine. It has chrome, over/under shotgun exhaust. Look at the oil tank. It is the chrome "Horseshoe" style. This style Softail® Deluxe has the full front fender.</p>
<p>"Nice," blared Jake with a huge grin on his face and a twinkle in his eye.</p>
<p>I didn't know exactly what a Twin Cam 96B Engine meant but I knew Jake was impressed and would explain it to me later. "I like the chrome, laced wheels. How many miles per gallon does this get?"</p>
<p>"This sweet ride gets ESPFI 54 highway and 35 city mpg," Gary said as Jake and I circled the Softail® Deluxe absorbing every shiny feature.</p>
<p>"Let us sleep on this and get back with you tomorrow. She takes Riders Edge® in two weeks. I think we want to have her ride waiting on her when she finishes the course," Jake told Gary.</p>
<p>"Well, that's great, folks. I think you are making a fine choice here. I do want you to get this bike if it is your choice. I can hold it for you if you want to leave a hundred dollar deposit. The deposite would be completely refundable if you change your mind. It would assure that we did not sell the bike if someone comes in after you and wants this bike," informed Gary.</p>
<p>"OK, I'm glad that you care enough about us as your customer to offer to hold the bike," I said, impressed.</p>
<p>"Can we talk with someone about financing," Jake asked.</p>
<p>"We have a great financing team. Tammy and Tori are both free to speak with you. Here let me introduce you!"</p>
<p>Well, I could go on all day with this story but I'll wind it up by saying that after talking with Tammy and Tori we purchased my motorcycle that day. In fact our whole group purchased a motorcycle that Saturday. All of us girls had our dream of riding to come true. Our husbands drove the bikes home that day but by the end of the month Lil, Jess and I had our endorsements. Riders Edge® went great and was a blast. We learned so much about motorcycle safety. We joined the H.O.G.® Chapter and made so many cool riding friends.</p>
<p>"You ready, Lil," I yelled as our Harley® motorcycles rumbled.</p>
<p>"Yes, Ready," Lil, replied with a wide smile.</p>
<p>"Are you ready, Jess," I screamed.</p>
<p>"Yep," replied Jess with a grin of satisfaction.</p>
<p>"Let's Go!"</p>
<p>Here we go. Our first all girls ride. We did it. We didn't let fear hold us back. We believed in ourselves and we are in control and loving it.</p>

<p class="faq_question">I broke my right ankle years ago and have some difficulty shifting gears.  I was looking at an 883 Sportster, but recently heard that Harley makes or made a motorcycle with auto tranny.  Any insite or advice.  Could I get an 883 customized so it shifts on the handlebars?

Yes you or any chopper shops could modify yours to shift by hand(never seen one on the bars) with whats called a jockey shift...old school stuff-a shifter like in a car comes up vertically from trans alongside the gas tank</p>
